Hi ho Bacon,

For those of you who have either never read me before, or live in a cave, I grew up on a farm.
We had cows, chickens, pigs, turkeys, ducks, even guineas but no horses. I used to beg my folks for a horse, or even a pony. The consensus among decision makers at the time was if an animal could not contribute in some way it had no place on our farm.
But my friends had horses. So I never stopped begging.

One day my folks were going to the livestock sale, I asked them to please try to buy me a Pony should an affordable one present itself. When they returned I said “ so where is my pony” Dad responded Here it is and a huge hog stepped down out of the truck. I can say that the hog cared about as much for being ridden as I cared for riding him, but ride him I did. I named him Bacon.

The first time I rode Bacon was quite memorable. I fashioned a bridle out of hay bailing twine. And some old leather straps that I found in the barn. I climbed atop the huge porker and gave him a kick. Boar Hogs do not like being sat upon, they like being kicked even less. Bacon proved to be perhaps the fastest hog in the county. He took off and tried to crush me on the side of his stall. Then he ran into the pasture and tried to hide in the blackberry brambles that grew along the barbed wire fence. I had since lost the bridle and was clinging to his ears with my hands and was doing some fascinating things with my feet to stay atop his wide back. Then Bacon headed back to the barn and screeched to a stop I slid forward dangling from Bacons bulbous head. I then fell into what can only be described as a hog mire.

I did not let this deter me from hog riding and in time would submit to being ridden after an hour or so of wrestling the bridle into him. I took quite a bit of kidding due to riding Bacon, mostly it was my pony riding friends who would make comments about Hog Wayne the smelly cowboy.
I never did get a horse. Which is just as well. I did have one of the rare joys of eating an adversary when Bacon was indeed bacon.

Tale of two Snagleys Part 2

Ok, where was I..

They put some initial stitches on the arteries to stop the blood, and continued to push fluids. Then they performed every x-ray and CAT scan they could think of. Then a plastic surgeon showed up and put 40 stitches in my forehead, after he pulled my scalp around exposing my skull and freaking out all the interns. Then they stupidly sent me home.

I was still in shock so I was in no pain. But about 2 hours latter I started hurting really bad. I took a total of 3 Percocet in about two hours and it did not take the edge off. Then I started barfing like a madman, and tore up my throat and started barfing blood. So my wife took me back to the ER. They admitted me and got the nausea and pain under control and I came home the next day and slept for 3 days. We abandoned the percocet and started oxycodone. I hate that crap, so after 3 days I stuck with Tylenol and Advil.
Evidently I had a bad concussion, they said that evidently I had forced myself to stay with it at first because I had my son with me. But after the shock wore off the results of the concussion

I have since purchased a used 2001 GMC sierra. I had a ford ranger. I figure the kids will be safer in the back seat of the sierra that in the back seat of a ranger so we are going to try that.

I have migraines anyway but I had one that lasted a little over a week. I could not stand any light or sound. (Try that with 4 kids under 9).

The headaches are better and I am back at work.

The first day I tried to go to work I barfed into a bag as my wife was driving me.

Oh and welcome back Chuck.
He has asked that I treat him a little better this time around. But all I can do is try.

I am going to try to make the rounds to everyones blog soon.
thanks again for all the kindness for me and my blessed son. I have started calling him the golden child.

Snagley out.

a tale of two snagleys

There I was.

Me and my boy.

We had just come from being skunked again deer hunting.
It was a dark and dreary night. Rain aplenty we were traveling on hwy 280, I noticed some cop lights up ahead and started to slow down. I was stopped in the road waiting my turn in traffic when I heard a screech. I looked in the mirror and saw a truck bearing down on me, I realized that there was no way this guy was going to stop in time, I remember hoping that he would use the empty paved shoulder of the road and go around me. Then I felt the pound and heard the crash. I was knocked across the median and into oncoming traffic. I steered the truck off the road and turned it off.

I opened my eyes and saw blood pouring from my head into my lap. I then looked to the right and say my son. He looked scared really scared.

Daddy mode took over and it was all about him. We talked and I told him Daddy is hurt are you ok, He looked at me with his baby blue doe eyes and said “yes Daddy”. I told him I am going to be ok but I am going to need his help. I needed him to do exactly what I said but that Daddy is tougher that a wrecked truck and we are going to be fine. I got him to hand me a cotton vest to try to stop some of the blood. I got him out of the truck and we walked over to a covered wagon that the filling station I was in front of was using as a prop. I had him get into the wagon behind me, and I calling my wife.

The cops showed up quickly as they were already there from the first wreck. I was pretty much out of it so I told the wife I had a wreck and I did not know where I was and hung up. The paramedics showed up less than 5 min from the time of the wreck. I found out latter that I was across the street from the fire dept. I gave my blood covered phone to a paramedic and told her to press 2 and hold it and speak to my wife.

The paramedics applied pressure to try to slow the blood flow. I was wearing a pair of military polypropylene long johns and a long sleeve cotton t-shirt. They were both saturated to my skin from the head down with blood. Blood was in my eyes and I could taste it in my mouth. I found out latter that 2 arteries in my head were severed.

I kept speaking to my boy and trying to assure him I was going to be ok. He was very brave. I am very proud of the way he handled things. He is an awesome kid. He is going to be a profound adult. He stayed with me so that we could hear each other. They loaded us into an ambulance and he got up front where there is a seat belt. I had him tell the paramedics about the squirrels we saw that evening and the woodpeckers and the good time we had riding the 4wheel drive gator around in the mud.

We got to the E.R. the unloaded me and took me inside. I had lost a lot of blood at this point and I could tell by the faces of the people that I passed that I must have looked pretty bad. I could not hear my son at this point and called for him. He ran to the gurney and we talked. He started to cry when he saw me. I assured him that I am tougher than this, and got him telling the E.R. nurses about our day.

Family services showed up and my boy went with them. 2 min latter my in-laws showed up and took him to the waiting room. He gave them a long hug and i finialy relaxed
Then I went into a room for some work.

To be continued.

P.S. I am much better now.

P.S.S thanks for all you kind comments

Another Snagley Update...

Hey folks, it's Chuck again. I talked with Snagley today and he asked that I again update his blog and fill you all in on his progress.

Well, he's not back to work yet. Although he is feeling a bit better (headache has diminished a bit), he's not actually up to snuff yet. I imagine he'll be back in the swing of things in a few more days. I don't know if he'd want me to tell y'all this but he did try to go into work this morning and as he was on his way he started vomiting all over himself. He said he'd only had grape juice for breakfast, but had forgotten about drinking it, and at first he thought he was puking blood! Quite a scare I'd imagine.

Y'all keep sending him your good thoughts and let's hope he's back soon. Snag, I'm sure you're reading this on your blackberry (he can read but not post)....so, get well buddy or I'll come over there and butt tag your toothbrush!
